Single vineyard, 100% pure single varietal Syrah from ‘Hermitage’ (MS) clone grapes. An unfined wine, cellar-aged for 9 years before release in 2020. A classic, well-balanced cool-climate Waiheke Syrah, similar to those from ‘Cote Rotie’ – with smooth velvety tannins, complex black fruit, cassis and lightly spiced with black pepper.
This wine needs no description but it is quite amazing – from an exceptional year and right up with the best examples of its type. Our 2008 Monte was a champion trophy wine at the Bragato and this wine is certainly its equal – if not better. It brings dozens of ‘wows’ daily from the tasters in our cellar door. A typical, massive but silky-smooth, fruit-packed, single vineyard,100% pure single-varietal, Montepulciano from a very good vintage on Waiheke Island. Still very young tannins and just a baby after 9 years of cellar-ageing. Typical dense purple colour and concentrated complex dark plum, blueberry and cassis. Although still youthfull it is now drinking well with its voluptuous, mouth-filling fine-grained velvety tannins and lingering, complex ‘plum pudding’ fruit flavours. Bottle-aged to an early intermediate stage. Released in Cellar Door due to heavy demand. This wine can be cellared for at least another 10 years. But enjoy its vibrancy meantime!
Lees-Aged Pinot Gris ‘sur lie’ An Italian-style, dry (sugar-free) and refreshing Pinot Grigio Blush – with a twist! This wine had ‘sur lie’ – ie sitting on the fine creamy sediments whilst I kept it cloudy by stirring it every 6 days to build the minerality and mouthfeel. The result is a dry, Italian-style Pinot Gris (ie Pinot Grigio) with classical Pinot fruit flavours including apple, citrus and spice but with added complexity (a yeasty minerality) and a long, lingering, smooth texture. Match with crunchy calamari, grilled snapper or eggplant parmigiano.
